چکیده

Vorticity is deposited baroclinically by shock waves on density inhomogeneities. We present 2D analytical results for , the circulation deposition per unit unshocked interface length, within the regular refraction regime. We also derive scalings for strong and weak shocks. Our results are validated by quantiications of numerical simulations of the compressible Euler equations using a second-order Godunov code. The results derived for the planar interface are generalized to calculate the total circulation deposition on sinusoidal interfaces.

Shock Interactions with Heavy Gaseous Elliptic Cylinders: Two Leeward-side Shock Competition Modes and a Heuristic Model for Interfacial Circulation Deposition at Early times Typeset Using Revt E X 2

1 Shock interactions with heavy gaseous elliptic cylinders: Two leeward-side shock competition modes and a heuristic model for interfacial circulation deposition at early times Abstract We identify two diierent modes, Types I and II, of interaction for planar shocks accelerating heavy prolate gaseous ellipses. These modes arise from diierent interactions of the incident shock (IS) and transmitt...

Baroclinic Vorticity Production in Protoplanetary Disks Part II: Vortex Growth and Longevity

The factors affecting vortex growth in convectively stable protoplanetary disks are explored using numerical simulations of a two-dimensional anelasticgas model which includes baroclinic vorticity production and radiative cooling. The baroclinic feedback, where anomalous temperature gradients produce vorticity through the baroclinic term and vortices then reinforce these temperature gradients, ...

Turbulent Decay and Mixing of Accelerated Inhomogeneous Flows Via a Feature Based Analysis

In this paper, we focus on the late time turbulence of an accelerated inhomogeneous flow environment, a generalization of Richtmyer-Meshkov environment. The numerical investigation is based on two-dimensional (2D) compressible Euler simulation, which is initiated by a shock wave hitting a gas layer (curtain). We observe excellent agreements with the previous decay analysis on 2D viscous isotrop...

Fast northward energy transfer in the

The adiabatic transit time of wave energy radiated by an Agulhas ring released in the South Atlantic Ocean to the North Atlantic Ocean is investigated in a two-layer ocean model. Of particular interest is the arrival time of baroclinic energy in the northern part of the Atlantic, because it is related to variations in the meridional overturning circulation. The influence of the Mid-Atlantic Rid...

A comparison of two formulations of barotropic-baroclinic splitting for layered models of ocean circulation

In numerical models of ocean circulation, it is widespread practice to split the fast and slow motions into barotropic and baroclinic subsystems, respectively. In the case of the baroclinic equations, the dependent variables can either be (1) slowlyvarying baroclinic quantities, obtained from splitting the original flow variables into barotropic and baroclinic components, or (2) the original un...
